Just off the charming, unassuming--and heretofore unknown to me--Marsh Road at 79th Street is a lovely historic home that can be yours for the bargain price of $1!
Upon first viewing the home, I recalled Elizabeth Bennett's line from Pride & Prejudice when she first sees Pemberly: "I don't think I've ever seen a place so happily situated." By all accounts, this appears to be perfectly located, with gorgeous old trees and lots of space surrounding it. Sadly, time is marching on and encroaching development will soon forever change this landscape.
So! Two choices for this vintage beauty: stay here and be destroyed or find a fearless angel with a love of storied old buildings willing to practically move heaven and earth--or just lots and lots of earth--and the house, in order to save it.
"Where there's a will, there's a way," is my motto. And it will have to be yours too, if you want this historic home saved! The clock is ticking, so taking swift action is your best chance to make the difference between life and death for this structure.
A Little Background:
The home is known as the Cotton-Ropkey House and it stands at 6360 West 79th Street. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and the first part of it was constructed circa 1850.
Have you heard of John or Isaac Cotton? Isaac, the son of John, lived in the home from 1856 to 1890. He farmed and raised fine wool sheep and bees, serving for a time as president of the Indiana Bee-keepers Association. He was also a member of the Swine-Breeders and Wool-Growers' Associations of Indiana--how 'bout that for some homestead bragging rights?
If you have any interest, or know anyone who might have any interest in this property, please contact Mark Dollase at my perennial favorite not-for-profit (saving our history one building at a time!) Indiana Landmarks, 317-639-4534 or email him at mdollase@indianalandmarks.org
Any questions about the house should be directed to Mark.

Loved the view to the southwest--too bad that won't come with the house!
