Memorial Day tribute...

At the very heart and epicenter of Indianapolis, Hoosier pride for our soldiers is the focal point. This city has devoted many resources and much real estate to celebrating the contribution of Hoosier soldiers to our country, so please allow me to fall in formation...
Just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge my many grandfathers who have fought for our country. I love this article about one of my great grandfathers who fought in World War II:
My grandfather Benedict is the only of my soldier relatives I knew--and I adored him. He mustered out of Fort Benjamin Harrison, just a simple Hoosier lad. In the end, he was awarded 8 bronze stars for his lengthy tenure in Europe during WWII, having served in Algeria-French Morocco; Tunisia; Sicily; Naples-Foggia; Rome-Arno; North Appenines; Rhineland; and Southern France. He didn't like to talk about this time--and after watching "Band of Brothers" and "Saving Private Ryan" I can see why.

Soldier's and Sailor's Monument- Civil War Tribute

Since this is a blog about Historic Indianapolis, I thought it was interesting that in my tree, I have 2 grandfathers who fought in WWII, 1 who fought in WWI, and 1 in the Civil War who were all Hoosiers. There are plenty of other soldiers (6 Revolutionary, other Civil War soldiers) who weren't born & raised here in the heartland. I just wanted to acknowledge my ancestors for their contribution to our country on this Memorial Day.
I'm not happy about all the beautiful buildings that were destroyed to create this, but it is a beautiful tribute to our World War I soldiers.

I have been so fortunate to have attended a few meetings of the World War II Round Table discussion group here in the city--what an honor to meet and talk with these former soldiers. They truly were the "Greatest Generation."
WWII Round Table meetings are the 4th Monday of the month( June 28th this month). The meeting is free but dinner is $9.00 if one chooses to eat. ( dinner is completely optional)Dinner is @ 5:30; the meeting itself begins about 6:00 pm and concludes usually around 7:15. Knights of Columbus Hall 2100 E 71st St (71st/Keystone). Contact email is ww2rt@yahoo.com

Please share your stories! The contributions of our ancestors should not be forgotten!
