I believe this must be looking west since the house in the background looks like the former governor's mansion, which was just east of the (later constructed) Marott Hotel.
From a March 1905 newspaper mention:
"In spite of the protests of property owners who will have to bear assessments, the Moore-Mansfield Construction company, which has secured the contract for building the Fall Creek Boulevard, will begin its work next week. The assessments were recently considerably reduced by the Park Board, but many property owners argue that they should pay nothing. A large portion of the cost of the boulevard will be paid from a fund already on hand."
Who can imagine greater downtown without the lovely thoroughfare that is Fall Creek?
